Scientists have uncovered evidence that prenatal exposure to chlorpyrifos—a widely used agricultural pesticide—may cause lasting brain abnormalities that persist years after birth, according to research from the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health studying New York City children.

Brain Changes Detected Through Advanced Imaging

The research used magnetic resonance imaging to examine children whose mothers had been monitored during pregnancy. Dr. Virginia Rauh, researcher at Columbia University’s Center for Children’s Environmental Health, found that higher prenatal chlorpyrifos exposure correlated with brain changes and weaker motor skills years later.

“The developing brain is exquisitely sensitive to chemical interference,” according to research on neurodevelopmental impacts. The study adds to growing concerns about organophosphate pesticides raised by global health organizations and regulatory agencies worldwide.

Agricultural Use Continues Despite Indoor Ban
