Dr. Jeffery Taubenberger has stepped down as acting director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases after 13 months in the role, marking another leadership transition at the critical federal research institute. The departure arrives amid heightened scrutiny of laboratory safety protocols governing research with high-risk pathogens including Ebola and hantavirus.

Taubenberger, a distinguished virologist and pathologist, assumed the acting directorship in April 2025 following Dr. Hugh Auchincloss’s interim tenure. While NIH officials have not disclosed specific reasons for the resignation, the timing coincides with enhanced federal oversight of biosafety level 3 and 4 facilities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has intensified review of containment procedures and staff training protocols across institutions handling potentially pandemic pathogens.

The departure underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining stable leadership at NIAID while addressing critical infrastructure and safety concerns.
