Current data demonstrates that PEPFAR provides antiretroviral therapy to more than 20 million people worldwide, with an estimated 25 million lives saved through the program’s interventions over two decades.
These statistics underscore PEPFAR’s status as the world’s most successful bilateral HIV prevention initiative. The program’s reach extends across 50+ countries, addressing not only individual treatment needs but also strengthening broader public health infrastructure.
However, eight former CDC directors now warn that a proposed State Department restructuring could jeopardize these gains by dismantling the scientific and epidemiological foundation that enables PEPFAR’s effectiveness. The warning highlights concerns about preserving institutional capacity amid organizational changes.
