Have you ever stepped outside into bright sunlight only to experience an involuntary sneeze? You are not alone. The photic sneeze reflex, formally recognised as ‘Achoo syndrome,’ affects between 18–35% of the global population, yet remains one of physiology’s most intriguing unsolved mysteries.

Despite being documented for centuries, the precise neurophysiological mechanism triggering this reflex continues to elude complete scientific understanding. Researchers have proposed multiple competing hypotheses, including trigeminal nerve stimulation and evolutionary programming theories, but no single explanation has achieved universal scientific consensus.

While the reflex itself is benign and requires no medical intervention, understanding its underlying causes may help affected individuals better manage symptoms in daily life. This phenomenon underscores how much remains to be discovered about human biology.
