A striking finding emerges from recent scientific literature: between 18–35% of the global population experiences involuntary sneezing upon exposure to bright light. Despite this significant prevalence, the neurophysiological mechanism remains incompletely understood.

The photic sneeze reflex, or ‘Achoo syndrome,’ occurs without nasal irritation, allergen exposure, or conventional sneezing triggers. This involuntary response—particularly pronounced during sudden transitions from darkness to intense illumination—has prompted researchers to propose several competing theories, including trigeminal nerve involvement and evolutionary cross-talk between sensory pathways.

The inability to definitively explain such a common phenomenon highlights important gaps in our understanding of human physiology and sensory integration. As research progresses, answers may illuminate not only this reflex but also broader neurological processes.
