While most sexually transmitted infections in England are declining, genital herpes cases continue to rise, according to recent UK Health Security Agency surveillance data. This divergent epidemiological pattern reflects the unique challenges posed by herpes simplex virus, which establishes lifelong infection and can persist asymptomatically for extended periods.

Experts attribute the increase to multiple factors, including improved diagnostic testing methods and heightened public awareness prompting more individuals to seek medical evaluation. Young adults remain disproportionately affected across all STI categories, highlighting persistent gaps in sexual health prevention and education.

Sexual health specialists emphasize that regular testing and early detection remain critical for effective management and prevention counselling. The findings underscore the need for targeted public health interventions addressing young populations and enhanced awareness campaigns regarding herpes transmission and treatment options.
