A comprehensive surveillance study has documented Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) antibodies in nearly one-fifth of livestock sampled across Mauritania during 2020-2021. The findings, published in Tropical Medicine & International Health, underscore the continued presence of this tick-borne pathogen in domestic animal populations within the Sahel region.
Researchers tested 380 animals and identified marked differences in seroprevalence between species. Cattle demonstrated higher infection rates at 19.2% compared to 15.8% in camels, suggesting variable susceptibility or exposure patterns across livestock types. These results align with broader regional surveillance data showing consistent CCHFV maintenance in tick-animal transmission cycles across Africa and the Middle East.
The persistent viral circulation identified in this study carries significant public health implications, particularly for occupational groups including pastoralists, veterinarians, and slaughterhouse workers who face elevated exposure risk through tick bites and direct contact with infected animal tissues.
