A young woman has achieved complete neurological recovery and full mobility within 24 hours of undergoing laparoscopic removal of a rare benign schwannoma at Semmelweis University in Budapest. The successful outcome demonstrates how institutional investment in specialized infrastructure—particularly intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring technology—combined with coordinated collaboration between surgical disciplines, can transform patient outcomes in rare disease management.
The procedure required seamless coordination between the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Neurosurgery and Neurointervention. By mapping neural structures in real time during tumour removal, surgeons were able to preserve critical nerve function while achieving complete tumour excision. The patient’s rapid discharge underscores how minimally invasive approaches, when guided by specialist neuromonitoring, can significantly reduce recovery time and morbidity in complex pelvic surgery.
This case highlights the clinical value of centralised rare-disease centres equipped with multidisciplinary expertise and advanced technology.
