One in Five Adults Depressed Globally—Yet AI Innovation Slows

Approximately one in five adults worldwide experience depression annually, according to World Health Organization estimates. Despite this staggering disease burden, treatment innovation remains constrained, and a persistent treatment gap affects 50 percent of patients in low-income regions. Remission rates with first-line antidepressants remain disappointingly low at roughly 15 percent.

Against this backdrop, Neumora’s decision to halt its AI-driven depression treatment platform signals troubling implications. The closure demonstrates that digital mental health solutions face formidable barriers beyond algorithmic sophistication: regulatory validation frameworks, health system adoption pathways, and sustainable reimbursement models remain underdeveloped. Without these enabling structures, even promising machine learning approaches cannot translate research success into accessible clinical care for the millions suffering from depression.
