A new experimental study demonstrates quantifiable neurobehavioral effects of early developmental chemical exposure. Male rats exposed to DEHP during the perinatal period showed markedly elevated anxiety phenotypes in adulthood, including reduced exploration and increased immobility—behavioral markers persisting months after the chemical exposure ceased.
These findings suggest that DEHP may alter neural circuits governing fear regulation and stress responses during critical windows of brain development. The behavioral changes observed—reduced exploratory activity and elevated freezing responses in anxiety-provoking environments—align with known patterns of anxiety-related neural dysfunction. Given DEHP’s presence in medical devices, toys, vinyl flooring, and food containers, the implications for human developmental neurotoxicology warrant further investigation through prospective epidemiological studies linking biomarker exposure to behavioral outcomes in human populations.
