Plant-Based Biomaterial Offers New Hope for Periodontitis Treatment

Researchers have developed a composite biomaterial combining jackfruit latex, pomegranate peel extract, and simvastatin—a cholesterol-lowering medication—that demonstrates early promise in treating severe periodontitis. Preclinical laboratory studies indicate the material simultaneously suppresses bacterial infection, reduces inflammatory response, and may support regeneration of alveolar bone and periodontal tissues lost to disease progression.

Periodontitis represents one of the most destructive oral conditions globally, affecting approximately 19% of adults according to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Current treatment options remain limited, particularly for cases involving significant tissue destruction. While these preliminary findings are encouraging, researchers emphasize that clinical translation remains in early stages. Human trials have not yet begun, and rigorous testing will be required before this biomaterial can be considered for standard dental practice.
