A striking statistical reality underscores the congenital syphilis crisis in the United States: 100% of cases are preventable with adequate prenatal screening and maternal antibiotic treatment, yet rates continue to climb. This paradox highlights a critical gap between medical science and clinical practice.

According to established CDC and WHO guidelines, penicillin achieves cure rates exceeding 95% for maternal syphilis infections. When combined with first-trimester screening protocols and treatment completion before the third trimester, transmission to the fetus is virtually eliminated. The barrier to prevention is not scientific uncertainty or treatment inefficacy—it is healthcare access.

Systemic failures in prenatal care, incomplete treatment of pregnant women with syphilis, and disparities in access to screening and antibiotics represent the true obstacles. These findings emphasize that reversing the congenital syphilis surge requires addressing underlying healthcare inequities rather than developing new clinical interventions.
