The World Health Organization has added the first molecular diagnostic test for Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) to its Emergency Use Listing (EUL) as of July 2, 2026. The test identifies viral genetic material in blood samples, enabling rapid and accurate confirmation of infection.
The EUL procedure evaluates diagnostic tools based on quality, safety, and performance standards while addressing the needs of low- and middle-income countries. WHO Assistant Director-General Dr Yukiko Nakatani emphasized that timely access to quality-assured diagnostics during fast-moving outbreaks is critical for containing transmission and enabling effective public health response.
This approval accelerates countries’ access to reliable diagnostic tools for early case detection, disease surveillance, and outbreak response. The listing also supports UN procurement agencies and governments in making informed purchasing decisions for public health emergency settings. This is a developing story.
