Botswana has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first country worldwide to attain WHO Gold Tier status for eliminating mother-to-child HIV transmission. This transformative victory represents decades of strategic investment, political commitment, and integrated primary health care implementation. The achievement demonstrates that even in high HIV-burden settings, effective interventions can virtually eliminate vertical transmission when supported by adequate resources and sustained governmental dedication. Beyond this landmark HIV milestone, Botswana strengthened its entire health system infrastructure during 2024-2025, completing a comprehensive Joint External Evaluation and developing a fully costed National Action Plan for Health Security. The country’s immunization programmes and disease control mechanisms were significantly enhanced, positioning it as a comprehensive model for global health system strengthening. This achievement provides powerful evidence that systematic, evidence-based approaches can deliver transformative public health outcomes. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
