What Are Bacteriophages?
Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and destroy bacteria — each phage type targeting specific bacterial species while leaving human cells and beneficial bacteria untouched. Georgia, home to the Eliava Institute in Tbilisi, has continuously developed and used phage therapy for a century, making it a world reference point as antibiotic resistance turns global attention back to phages.
What the Case Series Shows
Three patients with resistant purulent surgical infections — wound infections producing pus and defying standard antibiotics — were treated with phage–antibiotic combination therapy. The rationale: phages and antibiotics attack bacteria through entirely different mechanisms, and combined they can succeed where either alone fails, sometimes even resensitising bacteria to antibiotics.
The distinctive addition is wound pH monitoring. Infected and healing wounds have different chemistry — infection tends to push pH one way, healing another — so tracking pH offered the clinicians a simple, inexpensive, objective marker of whether treatment was working, alongside visual assessment.
Why It Matters
Antimicrobial resistance is projected to become one of humanity’s leading killers. Every documented case of successful phage-based treatment strengthens the evidence base for a therapy the world increasingly needs — and showcases a field where Georgian medicine is not catching up to the world, but leading it.
