Georgia has produced physicians and medical scientists for centuries — but for most of modern history, it has lacked a peer-reviewed, internationally indexed medical journal of its own. The Problem GMJ Solves
Without a credible national journal, Georgian medical research faced a structural trap. Work of international calibre left the country for Western journals — invisible to many Georgian practitioners. Work of local importance — regional epidemiology, health system analyses, Georgian clinical experience — often had nowhere rigorous to go at all, and either went unpublished or appeared without peer review, DOIs, or discoverability. The national evidence base that policy and practice should rest on simply could not accumulate.
The Founding Vision
The editorial defines GMJ’s mission: a platform holding Georgian and regional research to full international standards — independent peer review, ICMJE/COPE ethics, open access under CC BY 4.0, Crossref DOIs, transparent governance — while remaining rooted in Georgia’s needs and open to the world. Publication is free during the launch period, removing the financial barrier that excludes researchers from lower-resourced institutions.
More Than a Journal
The vision extends to scientific capacity-building: author education, editorial mentoring, and creating the publishing experience that trains the next generation of Georgian researchers in international scholarly practice.
Why It Matters
