A critical discrepancy has emerged in FGM prevalence documentation in Tanzania’s Dodoma Region, with clinical observations revealing a troubling gap between reported and actual cases. While only 7.3% of women self-reported FGM status, clinical assessments of delivering mothers identified actual prevalence at 16.6%—more than double the self-reported figure.

This significant under-reporting gap highlights systemic challenges in FGM surveillance and suggests many affected women remain unidentified within health systems. The disparity likely reflects cultural stigma, fear of legal consequences, or limited health literacy regarding complications.

Despite these challenges, the accompanying educational intervention yielded encouraging results, with awareness scores increasing by 15 percentage points among young adults. The findings underscore the urgent need for both improved data collection methods and sustained community education programs to accurately track FGM prevalence while building momentum for abandonment.
