Chart showing GLP-1 medication discontinuation reasons and treatment resumption rates
A new analysis of treatment patterns shows that many patients who discontinue GLP-1 receptor agonists for type 2 diabetes eventually restart therapy, challenging assumptions about permanent discontinuation. Understanding why patients stop and restart GLP-1 medications offers clinicians actionable strategies for improving diabetes outcomes. First, discontinuation should not be interpreted as definitive treatment failure; many patients resume therapy once barriers resolve. Second, gastrointestinal side effects—the leading discontinuation driver—typically improve within weeks to months, suggesting that proactive patient education and dose titration can prevent unnecessary abandonment.

Third, newer GLP-1 formulations demonstrate superior persistence rates compared to earlier agents, offering clinicians evidence-based options to maximize adherence. These insights emphasize the importance of side effect management, cost support services, and patient communication in sustaining long-term glycemic control. Recognizing discontinuation as a dynamic, often reversible process rather than treatment failure enables more compassionate and effective diabetes care. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
