Dengue is the world's fastest-spreading mosquito-borne disease: half the world's population is at risk and cases have risen 30-fold over five decades, with 100-400 million infections per year (WHO). 4 billion at risk
An estimated 4 billion people in 129 countries live in areas at risk of dengue — more than half the world's population. About 40,000 people die from severe dengue each year.
No specific treatment
There is no specific antiviral for dengue. Management is supportive — hydration, fever control and monitoring for warning signs of severe dengue. Prevention is through vector control and vaccination.
New vaccines
TAK-003 (Qdenga, Takeda, 2023) and CYD-TDV (Dengvaxia, Sanofi) are licensed. WHO recommends Dengvaxia only for seropositive individuals; Qdenga appears effective regardless of prior exposure.
Wolbachia breakthrough
Wolbachia bacteria introduced into Aedes mosquitoes reduce dengue transmission capacity. A Phase III trial (Indonesia) showed 77% reduction in dengue incidence — a potential game-changer.
